ASCE Los Angeles Section Awards

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is on the development, redevelopment and improvement of airports or marine ports design and construction, and that showcases advances and/or innovation.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology. The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects where the primary design elements are in the the architectural engineering fields.  Architectural engineering also refers to building engineering and includes the disciplines of structural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and building architecture. The project should demonstrate unique applications of engineering principals and technology to building design and construction, and to advance the field of architectural engineering to achieve visionary architecture.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is improvement of or implementation of new bikeways and/or multi-use trails (pedestrians and bicycles) that improve and promote community connectivity and encourage non-motorized transportation.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is on bridge design/construction that showcase advances and/or innovation.  Projects include vehicular, rail and pedestrian bridges as well as bridge stability retrofits.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes civil engineering projects with the primary goal of improving the community.  These projects may include education elements, art displays and murals, water / play features and community gathering spaces such as plazas and community centers.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects which utilized exceptional or innovative construction methods and/or outstanding project management, design and construction methods to overcome challenges and successfully complete a construction project. This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology. The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes energy related projects where innovation and unique design improved the state of the practice for energy-related engineering.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.

Recognizes projects which demonstrate significant design / construction achievements in the field of environmental engineering, including projects that improve water quality, restore / enhance natural habitats and marine environments, protect sensitive species, restore / provide for migratory fish passage, remediate contamination, and where innovation improved the state of the practice for environmental engineering.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.   The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary purpose is flood management and flood protection and that showcases advances and/or innovation in the management of flood plains, addressing historical flood issues or emergency flood repairs and related improvements to the benefit of the environment and downstream lands and communities.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects where the primary purpose of the project is related to geotechnical engineering, and which demonstrates innovation and improved the state of the practice for geotechnical engineering.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is on the renovation/restoration design and construction of an historical civil engineering project, building, structure or facility. The project may include architectural elements and various engineering disciplines. The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is improvement of or creation of new parks & recreation elements that provide value and benefit to the community. The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is on roadway/highway design/construction for vehicular transportation or multi-modal transportation, and which showcases advances and/or innovation in design.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is on seismic retrofit design and construction of existing buildings and infrastructure, and which showcases advances and/or innovation in design.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects with a final construction cost that is less than or equal to $2.5 million, and where significant innovation improved project progress or streamlined complex logistics to provide a substantial benefit to the community or owner. This category includes a wide variety of project types described by the other project award categories.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is on structural and seismic design and construction, and which showcases advances and/or innovation in the field of structural engineering.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is to: promote broad understanding of economic, environmental, political, social, and technical issues and processes as related to sustainable development. This category includes projects that: advance the skills, knowledge and information necessary for a sustainable future; improve habitats, natural systems, system flows, and the effects of all phases of the life cycle of projects on the ecosystem; advocate economic approaches that recognize natural resources and our environment as capital assets; promote multidisciplinary, whole system, integrated and multi-objective goals in all phases of project planning, design, construction, operations, and decommissioning; promote reduction of vulnerability to natural, accidental, and willful hazards to be part of sustainable development; and  promote performance based standards and guidelines as bases for voluntary actions and for regulations in sustainable development for new and existing infrastructure.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is on transportation design / construction that showcases advances and/or innovation.  This category includes all modes of transportation (roads, freeways, rail, transit, multi-modal, transportation maintenance facilities, etc.), implementation of new design / construction methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects whose primary focus is on urban or land development or redevelopment design / construction, including infill projects and brownfields, which showcases advances and/or innovation in design and that provide value and benefit to the community.  This includes implementation of new methods, sustainable development designs / methods and materials, improvements on existing methods and materials, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects where the primary purpose is the supply, storage and conveyance of potable and / or recycled water, and which demonstrate innovation and improved the state of the practice for water supply and delivery projects.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

Recognizes projects where the primary purpose is the treatment of water or wastewater, and which demonstrate innovation and improved the state of the practice for the water / waste water treatment industry.  This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and/or incorporation of emerging technology.  The project must have been completed within the last 2 years.

This award is given on the basis of how well the individual  a) fairly covers all sides of the civil engineering project or issue; b) accurately describes the civil engineering project or issue; c) effectively explains how the project or outcome of the issue benefits the company or region; d) clearly shows the civil engineer’s role; e) includes the most knowledgeable civil engineering experts; and f) advances public knowledge and understanding of civil engineers, issues, and the profession.

1. Only reporters from general (nontrade) publications are eligible.  The publications must be national, regional or local.
2. News stories must be published a) in English; and b) primarily in North America.
3. If a story is co-authored, at least one writer must be a fulltime journalist.

2. Describe the nominee’s contributions to the civil engineering profession or the understanding of the importance of civil engineering infrastructure and related issues through journalism.
3. Provide any other information regarding the nominee to be considered for this award.

This award recognizes an ASCE member who, through their innovative efforts and long-term involvement, have advanced or significantly contributed to the field of civil engineering.
 
Criteria:

1. Consideration shall be given to the member who has exhibited professional achievement and has made significant impact to the field of civil engineering. This impact may be demonstrated in both professional activities, ASCE involvement and community involvement.
2. The nominee for this award shall be a Registered Professional Engineer and a member of ASCE.
3. Describe any achievements or recognitions the nominee has received in the field of civil engineering. This should include a description of the nominee’s ASCE involvement.

The award is given annually to an outstanding ASCE Branch Officer within the Los Angeles Section. This award is intended to recognize dedication, hard work and ingenuity that Branch officers provide to ASCE. Consideration shall be given to the Branch Officer who has exhibited exceptional leadership, management, service, or innovative ideas to their Branch.

1. The nominee for this award shall be a Registered Professional Engineer.
2. The nominee shall be a member of ASCE.
3. The nominee must be a Branch Office in the Los Angeles Section for the year the award is given.

1. The award is given annually to an outstanding faculty person who supports ASCE student chapters and civil engineering students within the Los Angeles Section. This award is intended to recognize faculty contributions to civil engineering students and their activities.
2. The nominee must be active with ASCE students at an ABET accredited Civil Engineering program at a University located within the area served by the Los Angeles Section the spring of the year the award is given or the fall of the previous year. Nominee may be faculty member or a lecturer.
3. Describe the nominee’s involvement with the Student Chapter of ASCE and/or civil engineering students.

1. The award is given annually to an outstanding ASCE Life Member. This award is intended to recognize the current efforts of active Life Members who have contributed to the advancement of our Society and its members by devoted service to the Region, Section, Branch, Life Member Forum, Younger Member Forum and/or Student Chapter.
2. The nominee for this award shall be a Registered Professional Engineer and be a member of ASCE Sacramento Section. This award is intended to recognize the current effortsof active Life Members who have contributed to the advancement of our Society and its members by devoted service to the Region, Section, Branch or Life Member Forum.
3. Include nominee’s ASCE involvement over time and nominee’s other professional activities.

1. The award is given annually to an outstanding Practitioner Advisor to an ASCE Student Chapter located within the Los Angeles Section who supports the ASCE student chapter and/or civil engineering students. This award is intended to recognize Practitioner Advisors’ contributions to ASCE Student Chapters and their activities.
2. The nominee must be active with ASCE Students in the Los Angeles Section of ASCE the spring of the year the award is given or the fall of the previous year.

The award is given annually to an outstanding ASCE Los Angeles Section Officer. This award is intended to recognize dedication, hard work and ingenuity that Section officers provide to ASCE. Consideration shall be given to the Section Officer who has exhibited exceptional leadership, management, service, or innovative ideas to the Los Angeles Section.

1. The nominee for this award shall be a Registered Professional Engineer.
2. The nominee shall be a member of ASCE.
3. The nominee must be a Section Office in the Los Angeles Section for the year the award is given.

1. This award is given on the basis of demonstrated community service with an emphasis on a diversity of service (i.e. one area of service is good, but two or three areas are preferred).
2. This award is intended to be given to a Member who has been engaged in community service outside of their day-to-day work and the civil engineering profession and exclusive of their service to ASCE. Areas of service include but are not limited to participation in service clubs, community activities, political service, school boards and planning commissions, Engineers Without Borders, religious activities, youth service and coaching, service to the less fortunate, public awareness campaigns, organizing community events, etc.
3. The nominee for this award shall be a Registered Professional Engineer and be a member of the ASCE in the Los Angeles Section.

This award is intended to recognize the efforts of an ASCE Member in the Los Angeles Section who is engaged in local, state and/or national legislative activities to further advance the interests of the Society and of the civil engineering profession in legislative activities through legislative and / or public involvement and outreach.

1. This award is given on the basis of an outstanding engineering achievement accomplished within the most recent award period. Consideration shall be given to the Member who has exhibited professional achievement through legislative activity and who has made significant impacts in legislative activities. This impact may be through professional activities, legislative outreach, member coordination, and other legislative related activities that address the Society’s goal of involvement in local, regional and national legislative activities.
2. The nominee for this award shall be a Registered Professional Engineer and be an active member of the ASCE Los Angeles Section.

1. This award is given on the basis of outstanding engineering achievement in the private sector.  Consideration shall be given to the Engineer that has exhibited professional achievement and has made significant impact to the field of civil engineering.  This impact may be through professional activities, ASCE involvement, research and innovative engineering solutions.
2. This award is intended to be awarded to individuals in the private sector.
3. The nominee for this award shall be a Registered Professional Engineer and be a member of the Los Angeles Section of ASCE.

1. This award is given on the basis of outstanding engineering achievement in the public sector.  Consideration shall be given to the Engineer that has exhibited professional achievement and has made significant impact to the field of civil engineering.  This impact may be through professional activities, ASCE involvement, research and innovative engineering solutions.
2. This award is intended to be awarded to individuals employed by a public organization.
3. The nominee for this award shall be a Registered Professional Engineer and be a member of the Los Angeles Section of ASCE.

This award recognizes the outstanding achievements of a Student Member of ASCE in Region 9 who is actively involved in ASCE activities and / or community activities through a university student chapter in support of the civil engineering profession.

1. The nominee must be an active Student Member of ASCE in Region 9 in the spring of the year the award is given or the fall of the previous year.
2. The nominee must be enrolled in an ABET accredited Civil Engineering program in the spring of the year the award is given or the fall of the previous year.
3. Provide a summary of the student's involvement, achivements, honors and awards , GPA, and other relevant information.

The award is given annually to an outstanding ASCE Younger Member Forum Officer within the Los Angeles Section. This award is intended to recognize dedication, hard work and ingenuity that YMF officers provide to ASCE. Consideration shall be given to the YMF Officer who has exhibited exceptional leadership, management, service, or innovative ideas to their YMF.

1. This award is intended to be given to an individual aged 35 years or less as of December 1 of the year of the award.
2. The nominee for this award shall be a Registered Professional Engineer or have an Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate and be actively pursuing licensure as a Registered Professional Engineer.
3. The nominee shall be a member of ASCE.
4. The nominee must be a YMF Office in the Los Angeles Section of ASCE for the year the award is given.

This award recognizes a younger civil engineer who has exhibited professional achievement and has made significant impact to the field of civil engineering.  This impact may be through professional activities, ASCE involvement, research and innovative engineering solutions.The award recipient shall be the person, in the judgment of the Awards Committee, who has best demonstrated these traits and has brought distinction upon himself/herself, ASCE and the field of civil engineering.

Criteria:

1. This award is intended for ASCE Younger Members, who are members age 35 years or younger as of December 1 of the year of the award.
2. The nominee for this award shall be a Registered Professional Engineer or hold an Engineer in Training certificate and actively pursuing licensure as a Registered Professional Engineer.
3. The nominee must be a member of ASCE.

Nomination Information:

1. Describe any of the nominee’s professional achievements, leadership, management abilities and/or exceptional dedication and service and state how this has brought distinction upon himself/herself, ASCE and/or the field of civil engineering
2. Describe the nominee’s ASCE involvement.
3. Provide any other information regarding the nominee to be considered for this award.

The nominee must be a local, state or federal legislator elected to public office and representing the constituents of ASCE in the geographic area they are nominated. This award is intended to recognize the efforts of the legislator that further advances the civil engineering interests of ASCE and the civil engineering profession, including the public's understanding of the role of civil engineers, and advocacy and support for the funding of civil engineering infrastructure and the welfare of the public.
